For this project Associated Housewrights, designed a U-shaped one and one-half story addition that created an efficient, friendly kitchen and sitting room. Natural light and a vaulted hip ceiling gave the room more space and an open feeling. Changing the elevations and depth of the upper cabinets and linking them with a wood soffit provided harmony and display space, and indirect lighting and interior cabinet lighting created different mood possibilities for the room.
Associated Housewrights also met the challenge of harmonizing the exterior design with the existing architecture. Rooflines were matched, along with custom gutters and windows to maintain architectural integrity. QR Design Awards judge Tony Perry recognized Housewrights' efforts, noting the "nice sense of style, yet keeping true to the existing structure. Craftsmanship is apparent throughout."
Judges Jack Philbin and Tony LaPelusa also recognized how well the addition tied in with the existing structure in a "creative and innovative" way. In the design and construction of the addition, several steps were taken to minimize the ecological construction footprint, including the use of recycled materials.
